Before we go any further, this isn’t just about ecommerce, as customers can be in ‘buying mode’ on all kinds of websites – business services, hospitality, financial, travel, health and wellness, food and drink, the list goes on…

According to a recent article by Big Commerce, there are eight different types of online buyer. Over the coming weeks, we will look more closely at each of these, but before we dive in, here are some simple engagement methods that can work with different buyer types:

  1. Simplify the buying process – think in terms of Amazon and their gold standard one click checkout.
  2. Consider single sign-in, where customers can log into your website using Google or social media accounts.
  3. Offer several payment options – card, PayPal, Klarna, payment by invoice if dealing with corporate buyers.
  4. Offer deals, incentives and time sensitive promotions.
  5. Consider upsells and hand-picked recommendations to complement products or services.
  6. Celebrate the seasons – refresh your site visually each quarter, and tailor your offer to match.
  7. Reward loyalty – repeat purchase discounts, exclusive codes, loyalty programmes, trade discounts.
  8. Educate your ideal buyer – provide visuals, reviews and related articles, emphasise the benefits.

Visit your website and look at it from the perspective of a buyer; is there anything from the above list that could be improved or implemented?
